Delaware iGaming Hits Landmark Despite Dip; Summer Slump for Sports Betting
By Jim Tomlin

The Delaware iGaming handle dropped in May compared to the previous two months, but the state still surpassed a landmark.

Meanwhile, sports betting handle in The First State had the usual summer slide.

Here is a glimpse at the latest Delaware gambling numbers.

Delaware Online Gaming Clears Hurdle Again

Delaware is one of six states with real money online casinos.

The state’s iGaming handle in May was $31,908,048. That was a 14.3% decline from April, when it was $37,212,671, the second-highest figure ever. The record was set the month before that, when Delaware reported $37,410,056 in handle for March.

However, the May total was still notable because it marked the first time ever that the state surpassed $30 million in iGaming wagers for three consecutive months, according to figures reported by the Delaware Lottery.

Another milestone was recorded for revenue (or net win) for Delaware online casinos as May was the third straight month with more than $1 million. That is also a first for the state. For perspective, the first time Delaware had $1 million in iGaming revenue for a month was in May 2020, at $1.13 million. The seven-figure barrier was broken just once in 2021, with $1.087 million in December. But so far in 2022, Delaware saw more than $1 million in four of the first five months.

The May revenue was $1,098,941, down 10.1% from the state record of $1,221,890, set in April, and just barely missing the No. 2 slot for the year behind the $1.12 million from January.

May$5.127M$0.495M

Sports Betting Down as Expected

Summer is a slow season for sports betting in markets around the country and Delaware, which reported May and June figures simultaneously, is no exception.

The Delaware sports betting handle for June was $3,507,846, down 31.6% from $5,127,275 in May. Those figures are way down from the recent peak of $22.2 million in October 2021, or even the $12.6 million in January.

That’s largely because Delaware has no mobile market, and its most convenient option is not available at this time of year.

During NFL and college football season, the state offers parlay cards, which often account for around 40% of the state’s sports betting handle in the fall. But in summer months the state only has retail betting available at three physical locations – Delaware Park in Wilmington, Bally’s Dover Casino Resort in Dover and Harrington Raceway in Harrington – so the market slides even more in Delaware than in other states.

And with the nearby Pennsylvania gambling market offering mobile sports wagering with plenty of options, many Delaware residents don’t have to go far for a more convenient option than a brick-and-mortar casino.

As for sports betting revenue, that was also down sharply in Delaware, falling 57.2%, from $494,697 in May to $211,921 in June.
